Nainital: the pretty lake district of Uttarakhand & a honeymoon spot

Nainital, a beautiful town that makes the Kumaon region of the nation even more beautiful, is a town that needs no introduction. However, those who know a bit less about the town; it is a famous hill town patching the outer regions of the ancient Himalayan range of mountains. It is better known as the Lake District of the state of Uttarakhand, for housing the beautiful Naini Lake and a couple of other lakes. It is also referred as the "Honeymoon Capital of India" for being a pretty town that is adorned by the riches of the nature to the fullest.

It is a small town that has been moderately modernized and where people live a very simple life. Religion and culture are pretty big in here. There is a highly revered temple of local goddess Nanda Devi, which is one of the two prime centres of the city. In fact, the very name of the town comes from the goddess and the lake for which the city is known. The Naini Lake is the other centre of the city and is a delightful lake having the shape of a pear. There are legends associated with the lake; it is believed that on the very spot where the lake today exists, fell the scorched eyes of Mata Sati, making it one of the 64 Shakti Peeths in India.



Nainital today is the core of administration in the district and is also the centre of commerce. A good number of tourism based industries today exist in the town. The local trade and hotels in particular are getting the exposure that they need. Starting from the luxury hotels in Nainital to the cheap lodges, guesthouses, and resorts, there are plenty of options to choose from. Other than these two, the city is also major centre, imparting quality education and producing more number of well qualified young enthusiasts. It is from the British colonial era that the town has been a centre of education. There are some excellent schools and educational institutions that were built in later 19th century. The Diocesan Girls' High School, now renamed to All Saints' College, Sherwood College, Birla Vidya Mandir, and St. Joseph's College are some of the oldest and best educational institutions in the town.

For the tourists, Nainital is a destination where the tourists are poured-over by a plethora of attractions and things to relish. The Naini Lake and the Nanda Devi Temple are straight out the two major allures of the town. The Naina Peak is another must visit place in the town. Also known as the China Peak, it is located at the height of 2611 m, and is the highest peak in the town. Trekking is the best way to reach the peak point, meanwhile horse rides are also available. The place is popular for giving the magnificent views of Himalayas and the town. Rest than these, the other most recommended attractions of the city are: Nainital Zoo, The Governor's House, Dorothy's Seat, Snow View Point, The Mall Road, and St. John's Church. Furthermore, if one like to travel, then there exist a number of interesting destinations that one could check out on a day's excursion.
