What is Laryngoscopy?

Laryngoscopy is a medical examination, which allows your doctor to see the back of your throat and your vocal box using a scope called laryngoscope. Laryngoscopy is of two types-
  1. Indirect Laryngoscopy is usually done in doctors’ office where your doctor uses a mirror and a light. The mirror is worn on the head as a head gear and the light is reflected on to the mirror, which allows the doctor to see the back of the throat.
  2. Direct Laryngoscopy allows your doctor to see the throat more deeply and properly. The flexible scope can go deeper and is comfortable for the patient as well.

Reason of performing laryngoscopy

The laryngoscopy is done to find any problem in voice like hoarse voice, weak voice, breathy voice or no voice. It is also done to find the cause of throat or ear pain. If the patient has trouble swallowing, blood in mucus or a lump feeling in throat, then also your doctor will perform this procedure to find the cause of problems.

How to prepare yourself

Keep the following points in mind to tell your doctor while going for a laryngoscopy:
  • If you are allergic to any medicine or anesthesia, then tell your doctor before the procedure.
  • If you have any bleeding problem, then you should inform your doctor otherwise it can damage your internal parts of the throat.
  • Had any previous surgery or treatment of your mouth or throat.
Note that, you will be given general anesthetics so you should not eat or drink anything for 8 hours before your examination.

The examination takes up to 30 mins to complete. Doctor may advice you to use ice packs on throat to avoid swelling. You should follow these points when your test is completed:

  • Do not drink or eat for a min of 2 hours after the laryngoscopy or until when you are able to eat something without choking yourself. After few hours when you feel ready, you can continue having your normal diet.
  • Do not cough hard or clear throat for several hours after the test.
  • If your vocal cords were affected, than you should avoid talking for at least 3 days so that they can recover from any damage.
  • Avoid shouting or talking for long hours as it can put strain on your vocal cords. Avoid whispering as well, because it also cause strain on the vocal cords.
  • If the tissues are removed during the test, then you may sound hoarse for 2-3 weeks or until the recovery has been made.
  • If any lesions are removed from your vocal cords, then you should go through a complete voice rest for up to 2 weeks. You should not talk, shout or whisper at all.
