How is electrotherapy beneficial?

Electrotherapy is a type of treatment that uses electricity in deduction of pain and promotion of tissue healing. This is no new technology and has been in the trade since many years. It is believed that electrical stimulation was used for pain control in the ancient Rome at 63 A.D. The process was done by standing on an electrical fish found in seashores. In between 16th to 18th centuries several types of electrostatic devices were used to get rid of headaches, joint pains and other pains.
Electrotherapy

Electrotherapy is the use of electrical signals to obstruct the transmission of neural pain signals to the brain. The electric currents slow down or divert the message of pain from the nerve to the brain. When conventional medicines and treatments are not effective, electrotherapy is a boon to patients. The electric currents can also be used to speed tissue healing in necessary patients.
There are two types of electrotherapy – TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation)
The electrical device sends electrical impulses through the skin. The impulses travel through wires to sticky pad electrodes that are placed on the skin above the painful area. A low intensity electric charge passes across the area relieving the pain. TENS is not addictive like other pain reducing medicines and it also doesn’t have any side effects. But it should be avoided by epileptics, heart patients, and pregnant women if not in labour and people with certain skin disorders.
TENS is used for the healing of many painful conditions like -
  • Arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Labor pain in women
  • Neurological pains like phantom pain
Interferential therapy
Interferential therapy (IFT) is a complicated form of TENS. High frequency currents are used are passed through the skin in a way that their paths cross and is created. This interference creates low frequency stimulation deep under the skin and helps in pain relief. damp sponges are placed on the body and these deliver a mild current like prick of needles. The current is manipulated to target the pain.
IFT is used for conditions like -
  • Pain relief
  • Muscle stimulation
  • Increase local blood flow
  • Reduction of chronic edema
  • Tissue repair
  • Improvement of joint mobility
The duration of the treatment depends on the patients. Generally the treatment is given in short time duration up to 5-10 minutes. In only certain cases it is given for longer duration for 20-30 minutes.
Electrotherapy is a part of physiotherapy treatments. Electrotherapy equipment physiotherapy is used extensively for treating musculoskeletal, neurological and soft tissue problems. It is a very reliable and fast way to get relief from pain without any side effects. You can find several devices for sale or hire and with the help your physiotherapist; you can use them to treat your condition. But, remember that any electrical device should be used for treatment only after proper recommendation from your doctor. There is a wide range of electrotherapy devices available online. You can order the preferred device and get it delivered to your door step.
